Plumbing Emergency? Don’t Panic! When Water Won’t Stop Flowing, Call the Pros

A plumbing emergency can happen without warning. One minute everything is normal, and the next you have water spraying from a broken pipe, a toilet overflowing, or water pooling where it should not be.

The most important thing is to stay calm and act quickly. Knowing what to do before the plumber arrives can help reduce water damage and protect your home.

What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

Not every plumbing problem requires immediate attention, but some situations should not wait.

Common plumbing emergencies include:

  • Burst or broken pipes
  • Uncontrolled water leaks
  • Overflowing toilets
  • Sewer or drain backups
  • Major water heater leaks
  • No water caused by a serious plumbing failure
  • Water leaking through ceilings or walls
  • A suspected slab leak
  • Severe loss of water pressure accompanied by a leak

When water is actively flowing where it should not, the situation can become more serious quickly.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water

If water is actively leaking, the first priority is to stop the water supply if it is safe to do so.

For a fixture-specific problem, such as a toilet or sink, look for the small shutoff valve near the fixture. Turn it clockwise to close it.

For a larger plumbing failure, you may need to locate your home’s main water shutoff valve.

Knowing where this valve is before an emergency happens can save valuable time.

Step 2: Protect Your Home

Once the water is shut off, move furniture, electronics, rugs, and other valuables away from the affected area if it is safe.

If water is near electrical outlets, appliances, or electrical equipment, avoid contact with the water and consider contacting a qualified electrician or emergency service when appropriate.

The goal is simple: stop the water, protect people, and limit additional damage.

Burst Pipes Can Cause Serious Damage

A burst pipe can release a large amount of water in a short period of time. Depending on where the pipe breaks, water can affect drywall, flooring, cabinets, insulation, and other building materials.

Older plumbing systems, freezing conditions, corrosion, high water pressure, and physical damage can contribute to pipe failures.

If you discover a burst pipe, shut off the water and contact a professional plumber as soon as possible.

What About a Leaking Water Heater?

A leaking water heater should not be ignored. Water around the tank, connections, or pressure-relief components may indicate a plumbing or equipment problem.

If you notice a significant water heater leak, shut off the water supply to the unit if you can do so safely and contact a plumbing professional.

A plumber can determine whether the water heater can be repaired or whether water heater replacement is the better long-term solution.

Sewer Backups Require Fast Attention

A sewer backup is more than an unpleasant inconvenience. Wastewater can create sanitation concerns and cause significant property damage.

Warning signs can include multiple slow drains, foul odors, gurgling toilets, wastewater backing up into tubs or showers, or several fixtures draining poorly at the same time.

Professional drain cleaning, sewer inspection, or camera inspection may be necessary to determine what is causing the backup.

Don’t Ignore a Suspected Slab Leak

A slab leak occurs when a water line beneath or within the foundation area develops a leak. Warning signs may include unexplained water usage, warm or damp areas on flooring, sounds of running water when fixtures are off, or persistent moisture.

Because slab leaks can be difficult to locate, professional leak detection can help identify the source and determine the appropriate repair.

When Should You Call a Plumber?

Call a professional when a leak cannot be controlled, water continues flowing, a sewer backup occurs, or you suspect a hidden pipe or slab leak.

Trying to make a complicated repair without the proper tools or knowledge can sometimes make the problem worse. Professional plumbing equipment, including leak detection technology, drain-cleaning equipment, hydro jetting systems, and plumbing cameras, can help identify and address difficult problems.
